1. What kinds of things can children learn to cook?
"Children can learn to cook simple things, I think. Like, they can make sandwiches or simple salads. Also, they might learn how to make some easy breakfast like eggs or pancakes. These are good because they are not too hard to cook and don’t need to use dangerous kitchen things. It’s good for kids to start with easy recipes."
2. Do you think it is important for children to learn to cook?
"Yes, I think it's important for children to learn to cook. Cooking is a good skill because it helps them to make their own food when they are older. It can also help them to eat healthier because they can choose what they put in their food. And, learning to cook can be fun for children. They can cook with their family and enjoy eating what they have made. So, it's good for them to learn when they are young."
3. Do you think young people should learn to cook at home or at school?
"I think it's better for young people to learn to cook at home. Because at home, they can learn with their family, and it's more comfortable and easy. They can also cook whatever they like and try different things. At school, maybe they don’t have all the things they need, and they might not get much time to cook many dishes. So, learning at home with parents is better because it’s more relaxed and they can learn more things at their own pace."
Sample 2: (band 6.5+)
1. What kinds of things can children learn to cook?
"At a young age, children can begin with very basic cooking tasks which serve as an excellent introduction to the kitchen. They can start by preparing simple dishes such as scrambled eggs, sandwiches, or salads. These require minimal cooking and are safe for younger children under supervision. As they grow older and more capable, they can progress to more complex recipes like baking cookies or making a basic pasta dish. This gradual increase in complexity helps them build confidence and skills safely."
2. Do you think it is important for children to learn to cook?
"Absolutely, it’s crucial for children to learn how to cook from a young age. This skill is not only essential for their independence but also beneficial for their health. By learning to cook, children gain the ability to make healthier food choices, understanding the ingredients and processes involved in their meals. Moreover, cooking can enhance their creativity and teach them valuable life skills like time management and responsibility. Additionally, it can be a fun activity that strengthens family bonds when cooking together."
3. Do you think young people should learn to cook at home or at school?
"I believe that both settings offer valuable opportunities, but learning to cook at home might have a slight edge. At home, young people can receive personalized guidance from family members, which can make the learning process more meaningful and tailored to their dietary preferences or cultural traditions. However, schools can provide a structured environment and teach a broader range of skills to a more diverse group of students, which can be beneficial as well. Ideally, a combination of both home and school environments would provide the most comprehensive culinary education."
Sample 1: (band 5.5+)
1. How enjoyable do you think it would be to work as a professional chef?
"I think working as a professional chef might be enjoyable because you can cook and create new dishes. Chefs get to work with different ingredients and make food for other people, which seems like it could be fun. But it might also be a hard job because you have to cook a lot and work in a busy kitchen. So, it depends on if you really like cooking."
2. What skills does a person need to be a great chef?
"To be a great chef, a person needs to be good at cooking and know how to make different kinds of food. They also need to be fast and keep the kitchen clean. Being able to work with other people in the kitchen is important too, because they need to work as a team. And, they should be creative to make new and interesting dishes."
3. How much influence do celebrity/TV chefs have on what ordinary people cook?
"Celebrity chefs on TV can have a lot of influence on what people cook at home. When people watch these chefs on television, they might learn new recipes and try them. Also, these chefs make cooking look easy and fun, so more people might want to cook. But some people might just watch for fun and not cook the dishes."
Sample 2: (band 6.5+)
1. How enjoyable do you think it would be to work as a professional chef?
"Working as a professional chef could be quite enjoyable, particularly for someone who is passionate about culinary arts. The role offers a unique opportunity to express creativity through food and innovate new dishes, which can be very fulfilling. However, it's also a demanding job that requires long hours and the ability to perform under pressure during peak times in a restaurant. While it can be exhilarating to see customers enjoy your creations, the environment can be stressful and physically taxing."
2. What skills does a person need to be a great chef?
"A great chef needs a blend of hard and soft skills to succeed. Firstly, strong culinary skills are fundamental, including a deep understanding of ingredients, techniques, and food safety. Efficiency and precision are also crucial in a fast-paced kitchen. Beyond these technical skills, a chef must have excellent communication and leadership abilities to manage a kitchen team effectively. Creativity in crafting dishes and a resilience to handle the pressures of kitchen demands are also vital components that contribute to a chef’s greatness."
3. How much influence do celebrity/TV chefs have on what ordinary people cook?
"Celebrity and TV chefs can significantly influence the culinary habits of ordinary people. They often introduce viewers to new ingredients, cooking techniques, and cultural cuisines that many might not encounter otherwise. This exposure can inspire home cooks to experiment more in their kitchens. Moreover, the approachability and charm of TV chefs can demystify cooking, making it more accessible to the average person. However, the actual influence might vary depending on an individual’s interest in cooking and their engagement with cooking shows."
